About the Africa Waste Observatory

Our Purpose

Our Mission

Our mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate critical information on waste generation, composition, treatment, and disposal practices across Africa. By providing accessible and reliable data, we aim to:

Support informed decision-making by equipping governments and organizations with evidence-based insights to develop effective waste management policies and strategies.
Promote Best Practices by highlighting sustainable waste reduction, recycling, and recovery initiatives that can be replicated and scaled across the continent.
Foster Collaboration by creating a network of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and local communities, to drive collective action towards sustainable waste management.
Raise Awareness by educating the public on the environmental, social, and economic impacts of waste, encouraging responsible consumption and disposal behaviors.

We believe that a well-informed continent is a powerful continent, capable of tackling its most pressing environmental challenges.

The Horizon

Our Vision

We envision an Africa where waste is viewed as a resource, not a burden. A continent where innovative waste management solutions drive economic growth, protect public health, and preserve natural ecosystems. Our long-term vision includes:

Zero Waste Communities by supporting the development of urban and rural areas that minimize waste generation and maximize resource recovery.
Circular Economy Hub by positioning Africa as a leader in circular economy principles, creating value from waste materials and reducing reliance on virgin resources.
Data-Driven Innovation by becoming the go-to source for data that fuels research, technology development, and entrepreneurial solutions in waste management.
Environmental Resilience by contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts by reducing landfill emissions and promoting greener waste management practices.

Through continuous research, stakeholder engagement, and strategic partnerships, we are committed to making this vision a reality for every African nation.

Context & Urgency

Why We Exist

Effective waste management depends on accurate data and informed decision-making. Across Africa, data is often fragmented, outdated, or inconsistent, making it difficult to allocate resources, design effective policies, or measure progress. AWO was created to fill this critical gap.

Core Pillars

Core Objectives

01

Improve waste management systems (solid, liquid, gaseous).

02

Promote integrated waste management based on the hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, treat, dispose.

03

Support evidence-based policies and investment plans.

04

Guide financial institutions on sustainable infrastructure.

05

Strengthen regional capacity and collaboration.
